This week at Redwood Valley High School's Career Day, I had the privilege of being the final keynote speaker, addressing over 200 students from 5 schools in the Redwood County area.
I shared my journey as a Professional Freestyle ATV Rider and entrepreneur, highlighting how pursuing passions can lead to incredible opportunities.
For over 20 years, I've been riding ATVs and building a career around my passion. In my speech, I discussed how I learned to market myself, created multiple companies, and now organize live events like the ATV Big Air Tour to connect with thousands of fans around the country every year. Alongside my brothers, we found ways to stand out, becoming the most recognizable ATV Freestyle riders globally.
This journey has led me to a career I always dreamed of, including opportunities like being a Hollywood Stunt Man, a playable character in a video game, riding in over 30+ countries, and now running one of the biggest LIVE motorsports tours worldwide.
But let's be real – it hasn't all been smooth jumps and high-fives. I faced challenges and setbacks, both on and off my machine. Through perseverance and adaptability, I managed to overcome them and keep chasing my dreams.
One key aspect I emphasized is the importance of setting goals. Whether it's conquering a new trick or growing your business, having clear objectives gives you something to strive for.
Pursuing a career based on passion requires you to become a jack of all trades. You need to learn multiple skills to manage a business – from sales and accounting to legal and marketing. It's like being a one-person show, but with a lot more risks involved.
I encouraged the students to use their youth to explore various jobs. Knowing what you don't want is just as important as knowing what you do want. Every experience teaches you something new about yourself and your interests.
After the talk, I spent time with the students, signing autographs and taking photos. Their enthusiasm and curiosity about finding their own paths were truly inspiring.
To all the students out there, remember this: Find what you're passionate about and pursue it relentlessly. Whether it's riding ATVs or starting your own business, believe in yourself and never stop pushing forward. Your journey may have its bumps, but it's all part of the adventure.
Keep chasing your dreams,
Derek
